As a lasting legacy of Iowa State University’s Sesquicentennial celebration, ISU Extension is coordinating a service project in each county this spring, summer and fall. Alumni and current students in each county are invited to participate, along with Extension staff, 4-H’ers and Extension county councils. When completed, ISU will present each county with a plaque to recognize the project.
Woodbury County Extension will be hosting two community service projects and plans to involve ISU alumni, current ISU students, 4-H members, Master Gardeners, staff, Extension retirees and other friends of Extension. In addition, staff will come from Iowa State University to assist in the community service projects.
The first project will be to paint the Sadler House in Old Town on the Woodbury County Fairgrounds Saturday, June 9 and Sunday, June 10. The second project will involve being a part of a playground build day at Chris Larsen Park in Sioux City on Saturday, September 15, 2007. This will be in partnership with the Sioux City Parks and Recreation Department.
Painting of the Sadler House will begin Saturday, June 9 at 9 a.m. and will go into the afternoon. On Sunday, painting will start at 1 p.m. People may come and go as their schedule allows. Every person is valuable no matter how much time they have to give. Participants should bring their paint brush and a stepladder if they have one. Taller ladders will be provided to reach the high points. Please call the Woodbury County Extension office to sign up to help at (712) 276-2157 or email Woodbury County Extension Education Director Sherry McGill at mcgills@iastate.edu.
Extension is proud of the quality of education that exists with Iowa State University and wants to give back something of value in our county in honor of the 150th birthday.
“We’re a century and a half old, but we don’t look it,” said Jack Payne, vice president for ISU Extension and Outreach. “From hybrid seed corn to biofuels, Iowa State University Extension has been relevant to Iowans by addressing important issues. Extension educators live in the communities where they work, so they can help connect Iowans to everything ISU has to offer.”
