Letter From a Reader

This letter was sent to Stacie Halbur, Danbury Community Club treasurer. The club thanks Loretta for her generous donation. Anyone who would like to send a donation may send it to Danbury Community Club, Stacie Halbur, First State Bank, Danbury, IA 51019.
Dear Stacie,
Enclosed is my check for $50 to help with Danbury’s 125th anniversary celebration. I was born to first generation Americans, raised and schooled in Danbury (DHS ‘43). My parents were Henry Schimmer and Katherine Erlemeier Schimmer. I am grateful and proud of my roots and all that Danbury provided as a hometown with good people, good schools, churches, etc. I left there after high school graduation to work and earn my fortune in Des Moines. However, I was earning just enough to pay my room and meals, and my betrothed was transferred to a base in Florida. He sent me a train ticket to come to Florida and marry “now” instead of “after the war,” so that ended my residence in Danbury, but not my visits and contacts in Danbury where I had lots of family and friends and “roots.” All three of my brothers born and raised in Danbury served our country in times of war. I currently have a grandson serving in Iraq. The Danbury Review is one of the most important pieces of mail I receive (even though it take 7-10 days to reach me), and it’s all interesting news to me. I really take pride in reading of all the work done by people like you to keep Danbury going, and I appreciate all of you very much. THANK YOU!
God bless Danbury and bless all of you, too!
Loretta (Schimmer) Landrum
