A group of AOMV sixth grade girl’s basketball players traveled to Akron on Saturday, December 30th, to participate in a five-on- five basketball tournament. There were four teams involved in pool play for the tournament championship. The Hawks started their day bright and early with the first game beginning at 8:30. The early morning opponent was LeMars Gehlen. AOMV controlled the entire game and posted a 24 to 14 win. The second opposition was provided by Sioux Center. This game the Hawks played outstanding defense and came away with a 22 to 14 victory.
These two victories set up an exciting championship scenario with Akron Westfield who also beat Sioux Center and LeMars Gehlen. In the championship game AOMV fell behind 18 to 11 at the half but were able to rally behind excellent defensive play and clutch shooting for a 27 to 25 win.
Team members awarded medals for their victorious day were Allie Dose, Karly Treiber, Sam Halbur, Jacee’ Hawkins, Megan Kirchgatter, Riley Ehlers, Hayley Seuntjens, and Shaley McDermott. Other members of the team unable to attend this tournament due to illness or previous commitments are Nikki Morrow and Alex Pulford.
On Friday, January 11, 2008, the AOMV Middle School hosted a spelling bee during a morning assembly. Thirty-nine spellers competed from the 5th-8th grades. Each grade held a spelling pretest or spelling bee to pick those who competed on stage during the assembly.
One by one the spellers faltered, mostly because of nervousness from spelling in front of the middle school student body. During the 11th round, Halie Edgington, daughter of Pat and Don Edgington of Mapleton, and Logan Buth, son of Lynn and Michael Buth of Danbury, each missed a word which put them in third and fourth place. The twelfth round had Jesse Sturgeon, son of Christine and Robin Sturgeon of Danbury, spelling "lethargy" correctly and Nicole Boysen, daughter of Kim and Ken Boysen of Danbury missing "enthusiasm." Jesse then spelled "vendetta" flawlessly to capture first place. Halie and Logan then fought for third place. Logan came out on top to get the third place honor.
Jesse, Nicole, and Logan now advance to the Northwest AEA Regional Spelling Bee in Sioux City on January 30, 2008.
