The students began Friday by competing in a hydrogen-powered car race. This consisted of the team building a hydrogen-powered car at school using a provided fuel cell and motor. The team had to design the chassis, wheels, axels, and storage tanks and route all of the necessary tubing. The team did well in the competition and placed 10th. Saturday’s competition was the Academic Science Bowl Competition, which had the students answering science and math questions in a quiz bowl type atmosphere. After six hours of competition the winner was crowned. The winning team came from Ottumwa’s Evans Middle School. The AOMV team placed 5th out of 16 teams. This was an extremely good showing for a small school, as the top four teams came from Ottumwa, LeMars, Cedar Rapids and Council Bluffs.
