DECORAH, Iowa -- The Maple Valley-Anthon Oto High School wrestling team participated in the 2008 Luther College Team Wrestling Camp in Decorah, Iowa.
The Maple Valley-Anthon Oto wrestling team finished the 2008 season with a 16-3 dual record. The team has attended the Luther camp for the past five years.
More than 750 athletes attended the 2008 Luther Wrestling camps directed by Luther head wrestling coach Dave Mitchell.
Clinicians at the camps included two-time NCAA Champion and former University of Iowa Wrestler TJ Williams, Luther College NCAA Champions Matt Pyle and Nate Hansen, National Coach of the Year Dave Mitchell, and NCAA Champions and Luther coaches Jeff O'Gara and Greg Lonning. Also presenting were Jim Jackson, Head Coach at Apple Valley High School Minnesota and Brad Smith, Head Coach at Iowa City High School.
Campers participated in team building activities, intensive "Train Like a Norseman" sessions, technique sessions and live wrestling sessions. The camp closed with an individual tournament.
Maple Valley-Anthon Oto wrestlers Cole Halton and Ricky Maynard earned Wrestler of the Day honors at Luther camp. In addition, Maynard earned individual tournament champion honors.
Rick Samuelson, current Luther wrestler, served as Maple Valley-Anthon Oto "Camp Coach" and provided wrestlers with valuable feedback. The team was coached by Head Coach Casey Conover and assistants Tim Jessen, Jody Walsh, Dick Kingsbury, Andy Wray and Guy Schwartzkopf.
Luther wrestling has experienced great success in recent years with the team placing in the Top four at the NCAA Division III Championships four out of the past five years.
