As a very fitting assembly on Veterans Day, Anthon vets Clayton Cooch and Marvin Hanson talked to the middle schoolers at AOMV of their memorable trip to Washington, DC. The 2 were among the 100 World War II vets who were chosen on a first come-first serve basis to participate in the Siouxland Honor Flight. The Honor Flight gave the veterans a flight to the nation's capital, tours to the memorials including the WWII Memorial, and visits with some of our political personnel.
Both men agreed that they were treated like royalty during their trip. Their return back to Sioux City was just as special as they were greeted by a band, color guard, and a large crowd.
The vets encouraged the kids to visit their capital if they ever receive the chance.
On November 10, the Flex students in Mrs. Herbold's class led an assembly in front of their peers to teach them about Veterans Day which is celebrated on November 11th each year. The students taught about the national seal, Flanders Field, and other general topics relating to Veterans Day. They also taught the student body the proper technique to fold a flag.

The Northwest Iowa Choral Association’s Junior High Honor Choir Festival took place on November 4, 2008, at the Storm Lake Community High School. Mr. Marlin Jeffers, who is currently an educational consultant for the Northwest Area Education Agency in Sioux City, directed this year’s festival chorus. He teaches at Western Iowa Tech Community College and Morningside College.
There were 46 schools participating in the festival with over 350 talented junior high singers in the chorus. Students from the Anthon-Oto Maple Valley Middle school who participated were the following: Sopranos Anna Duncan and Alex Pulford; Altos Ashlynn Whiley and Riley Ehlers; Tenors Jacob Miller and Brent Golden; and Basses Kevin Bruning and Ryan Dougherty.
The day was spent learning new music literature, new vocal techniques, fine tuning their performance skills for the evening concert, and learning about their personal character color.
