FFA Members Travel to National Convention

Rosauer Receives Highest Degree Possible

Maple Valley FFA students traveled to the National FFA Convention in Indianapolis, IN, on Wednesday October 22, 2008. They traveled there by charter bus along with other FFA members from Kigsley-Pierson, Westwood, LeMars, and Schaller-Crestland. The students who traveled to the convention in Indianapolis from Maple Valley were Shelby Wessling, Craig Drees, Taylor Reitz, Jeff Bruning, Paisley Conlon, Nick Yanak, Brittany Weber, Rebekah Benson, and two chaperones Brandon Cummins and Josh Benson.
While in Indianapolis they attended General Sessions, tours of a Landfill and Dried Flower Barn, a Rodeo, and visited the FFA career fair and shopping center. At the sessions they heard performances from the National FFA Choir and Band, saw a magic show and heard speeches from the National FFA Officers.
Also representing our chapter at the Convention were Molly Tullis and Jason Rosauer. Molly was selected as a member of the National FFA Choir and Jason received his American Degree, which is the highest degree that any FFA member can receive. Congratulations to both Molly and Jason!

Perez Wins Anthon Oto-Maple Valley Middle School Spelling Bee

Friday morning, January 9, 2009, the Anthon-Oto/Maple Valley Middle School held a spelling bee. Thirty-seven spellers from 5th to 8th grade braved spelling in front of their peers in hopes of advancing to the regional bee. Most of them were knocked out of the bee because their nerves took over the spelling, forcing them to throw in a wrong letter or miss a letter.
The contest which lasted just over an hour, determined who would compete at the regional bee in Sioux City on February 25th. The contestants slowly dropped out until Laura Perez, daughter of Marcella and John Babl of Mapleton, was declared the winner when Matthew Jepsen, son of Tammey and Rick Jepsen of Danbury, misspelled "gospel," a product of nerves. Laura spelled her next word correctly for the win. Todd Sherrill, son of Sonya Sherrill of Danbury and Dave Sherrill of Sioux City, took the third place honor.
During the local contest Mrs. Herbold served as the Master of Ceremonies and Mrs. Herrick was the judge. Dictionary people were Mrs. Bisenius and Mrs. Elmquist, Videographer was Mrs. Seuntjens, Rounds person was Mrs. Phillips, and Recorder was Mrs. Goettsch.
Congratulations and good luck to Laura, Matthew, and Todd.

AOMV Middle School Accelerated Reading Honors

View More Pictures

At the end of each quarter the students at Anthon Oto-Maple Valley Middle School have acknowledged students who have reached the 500 point accelerated reading milestone. This year, they are honoring those who reached a variety of Accelerated Reading milestones. After a student reads an Accerelated Reading (AR) book, he/ she takes a test to analyze his/ her comprehension of the story. As the books increase in difficulty, so do the points. As students pass 100, 200, 300 etc. point milestones, they earn gifts from the school. The top 10 readers accumulated the most AR points during the quarter.
Here are the milestones and awards from the second quarter.
