Maple Valley-Anthon Oto High School is extending a special congratulations to Joey Flanigan and Brandi Kerns, who were named school winners for the prestigious Wendy’s High School Heisman Award. To be eligible for this award, students must display academic aptitude, athletic talent, and community leadership. The Wendy’s High School Heisman program celebrates the achievements of the nation’s top high school senior student/athletes, recognizing the importance of a well-balanced lifestyle. MVAO senior student/athletes who met the criteria for this award were encouraged to apply online for this honor. ACT assessment evaluated the entries at that level.
Joey, son of Mike and Tammy Flanigan of Mapleton, has been involved in football, basketball, and baseball all four years of high school, as well as track his freshman and junior years. Joey has also been a 3-year Gold Club member, was selected for National Honor Society, and has been involved with BPA, FFA, and student council.
Brandi, daughter of Dave and Jodi Kerns of Anthon, has been involved in basketball all four years of high school, as well as softball two years and cross country two years. She is a member of Gold Club this year.
Created in 1994, the Wendy’s High School Heisman program has celebrated youth excellence for 14 years. The program consists of six stages Ð applicants, school winners, state finalists, state winners, national finalists, and national winners. Twelve national finalists were invited to participate in the Heisman weekend festivities during an all-expense paid trip to New York City in December.
