Seventeen 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th& 8th grade students from Maple Valley and Anthon-Oto competed as three teams at the Regional Destination Imagination competition in Carroll on March 1st. The regional competition consisted of 67 teams comprised of over 350 students. The MVAO teams placed very well and two teams have earned a trip to the State Destination Imagination competition in Ames, IA on April 5th.
You are probably wondering just what is Destination Imagination. Destination Imagination is an international creative thinking and problem solving competition. The teams prepare for the competition by meeting after school and on the weekends. Students work in teams of 5 Ð 7 students along with a volunteer parent manager to solve one of five long-term challenges. They do this by performing a skit that incorporates art, technology, performance, improvisation and real world skills. The teams have been working together since November on their main challenges. Then comes the other part of the competition, called the Instant Challenge. This portion of the competition assesses the student’s ability to think on their feet. The students go into a room for an instant challenge of 4-8 minutes where they may be asked to build something, act something out, or a combination of both. To give you a better idea of what the students are expected to do for their main challenge, here is a sample of what our students have been working on for the past few months.
One MVAO team chose to compete in the challenge called “DI’ve Got a Secret”. This challenge required the team to present an original story about a secret using a masquerading character and moving set pieces. The team also had to integrate an optical illusion and two side trip talents of the team. The team had to create all of their costumes, set and props for their 8-minute presentation. The middle school team of Ashley Buth, Logan Buth, Morgan Hart, Jamie Herrick, Jacob Miller and Todd Sherrill accumulated 230.99 out of 400 points to secure 12th place in the middle school division.
Two MVAO teams chose the challenge called “Chorific”. This challenge required the students to research 12 different famous people. When they got to the tournament they randomly chose a chore and an obstacle to the chore and were then given 30-minutes to create a skit and props to tell how they overcame the obstacle for their chore. The team also had to create five different sound themes, integrate an improvisational technique and once they were on stage they had to overcome a second obstacle. To accomplish all of this the team was only allowed to use items like cardboard, chenille sticks, fabric, milk crates, bubble wrap, beans, chairs, drinking cups, cookie sheets, aluminum foil and tape. One minute before they were to perform they had to choose a famous person out of a hat and then they had to incorporate their research into their skit. For example; the middle school team had to combine the chore of shoveling snow that is over your head, five sounds, freeze frame commenting, information about Temple Grandin and the second obstacle of “it starts snowing again” all in 30 minutes or less. Could you do this? The teams from MVAO can. The 4th & 5th grade team of Madyson Hinkel, Marina Lacey, Laura Perez, Jordan Trucke and Luke Whitney earned 359.45 out of a possible 400 points placing them 3rd in the elementary division. The Middle School team of Anna Duncan, Alexis Boyle, Ethan Lloyd, Hailey Morgan, David Templeton and Kalli Weber did very well in their age division and placed 1st with 400 out of a possible 400 points. This has earned both teams a trip to the State Destination Imagination tournament in April.

Beware of Scams

Betty Mathew of Cherokee, daughter of Rita Dirksen of Danbury, received a phone call from the IRS stating that they had $500 for her. They knew information about Betty that the IRS would know, but Betty was wise on them. For one thing, the person representing the IRS was obviously from a foreign country who was speaking English very poorly. For another, they wanted her to disclose very personal information, namely her bank account number. Betty did not fall for their scam.

Representative Clarence Hoffman

The past 10 past ten years I have paid a lot of attention to the economic growth of our area and the opportunities or problems that confront us. Crawford, Ida, Monona and Harrison counties qualify for enterprise tax credit. This means we are in the bottom 25% of counties when it comes to income, growth and poverty levels. The purpose of the enterprise tax credit is to help those counties improve their income, grow and have fewer people in the poverty classification. We have been eligible for these tax credits for 10 years but still remain in the lower 25% of counties.
