Katie Lynn Hoskins
Katie Lynn Hoskins, age 16, of Soldier passed away on Thursday, January 9, 2025, at Children's Nebraska Hospital of Omaha. She would have been a member of this graduating class.
At age 14, Katie had received a life-saving double lung transplant when she was diagnosed with a rare and deadly disease called Pulmonary Veno Occlusive Disease. The transplant, performed at Texas Children's Hospital, was successful, but her life afterwards was filled with more medical trials. Only a year after her transplant she developed Post Transplant Lymphoproliferative Disease, a type of cancer unique and rare to transplant patients. She underwent treatment but ultimately began to show signs of incurable chronic rejection of the transplanted lungs. This eventually led to complications she could not recover from in her weakened state.
Katie discovered a love of music at a very young age. At 2 years old she performed an entire 3-verse song for family and friends and was quickly hooked on performing. She performed in musical theater as a youth and teenager with Omaha Community Playhouse in Omaha, Elkhorn Community Theater in Elkhorn, NE, as well as Chanticleer Theater in Council Bluffs.
At 8 years old she sat down at a piano and discovered she could play by ear almost any song she heard. She continued to grow that talent as well as learning to read music and became an accomplished pianist and later song-writer. She would often perform, singing and accompanying herself on the piano, ukulele, or guitar.
During the last year of her life, knowing the end was near, she made a goal to learn 20 new things before she died. This is when she taught herself to paint with watercolor, play new instruments, and she especially loved learning to crochet small animal creations she enjoyed making for nurses and doctors while she was in the hospital.
Katie was preceded in death by her sister Elaine Hoskins and her grandmother Serelle Hoskins.
She left behind siblings Maggie, Catcher, Darla, Mira, and Samuel McClure, as well as her parents Adam and Vera Hoskins, and many extended family members. |

Joey Koithan's Commencement Speech
I'd like to start this speech by first giving thanks on behalf of the class of 2026 to everyone who made this day possible: the school board, administration, faculty members, coaches, janitors, parents, family, friends, and anyone else whom I may have missed. I also want to say thank you to my classmates for electing me to give this speech; it's truly an honor to represent such an extraordinary group.
So, to the class of 2026, first and foremost, congratulations! Today, we're celebrating all that we've had to go through to make it to this point. All the tests & quizzes, homework, extracurriculars, and, let's be honest, the people you have to deal with, and even more impressively, the people that have to deal with you. But hey, we survived it all! There were definitely days that felt way too long, relationships that came and went, words that were left unsaid, and tests that made you feel like an idiot. But there were also definitely those days that felt like they weren't quite long enough, jokes only you and your friends understood, memories made, and lives changed. What I'm really trying to say is that the wait wasn't only worth it, but the best part of the whole thing all along.
I can specifically remember my freshman year, writing my first of many SSW's, and just this week, we received those initial ones back to reflect on them. I can remember being so nervous just to put my goals on a piece of paper out of fear of not reaching them and having to come back and face them in the future. I didn't want to disappoint myself, but I trusted my gut anyway. I'm proud to say, and I hope a lot of you are also able to say that you at least got what would be a passing grade on your high school bucket list.
We need to understand that this time of year comes with a lot of goodbyes. Goodbyes to everything that I mentioned earlier, yet just because we say goodbye doesn't mean that everything is gone with the wind. Just because we won't have the same people around us or classrooms in front of us doesn't mean we won't take our experiences and memories with us. What you did with your time here at MVAOCOU, whether you liked it or not, will stay with you and be a part of you for the rest of your life, and I hope you were able to make that a positive thing. To add to that, there's a quote from a book I like (I'm not sure if you've heard of it, it's called the Bible). But the quote goes like this: "As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another." (Proverbs 27:17) I'm not sure about you guys, but I've found that truth to be very apparent throughout my time in high school. We've all grown in ways we could have never imagined and changed in ways we'll never forget, and yeah, maybe we haven't all gotten along all the time, but I hope that we can all take a moment and appreciate everything we've done for one another.
The change that we experience comes with a lot of letting go. I'll use an example that we should all be familiar with by now; most of us hate them, but the meaning still stands: A dandelion. I think it does a good job of demonstrating what this time of our lives is really like. A dandelion starts as any plant does; it germinates fairly quickly and reaches maturity within 8-15 weeks, which is also about how long this school year has felt. Next, dandelions bloom into bright flowers, and you think it'd be nice if they just stopped there. But for the dandelion, that would be the end of the line for them. Instead, they move forward with their development and leave the flower behind. They develop seeds in that giant puffball and release them when the wind is strong enough. I know we aren't quite dandelions, but the principle still stands. High school has been a time for us to bloom; we've been able to show off the best of ourselves. But if we stay here, no matter how nice it might seem right now, we won't be all that we are meant to be. What I mean by that is that we should lead selfless lives for the good of others, as Jesus said: "It is more blessed to give than to receive". My hope for us all is that we go out into the world and become more than just ourselves. That we spread and influence as many lives as we can, and carry the best parts of this place with us. So that the world becomes just a little bit more like a place that we want to be.
And as we stand ready to be blown into the wind and scattered wherever it may lead us, whether it be college, trade school, the workforce, or whatever plans you may have, it's important that wherever you land, you make the most of where you are and who you're with. The future is often scary, and I'll be the first to admit that change isn't always the most appealing. To be honest, change is one of the things that I dread most in life. But in that change, I want you to know that there are people who care about you and they are there for you, cheering you on.
I'd like to leave you with one final remark before I'm done. Just a few weeks ago, my grandpa George passed away, but what I want to tell you about him is that 76 years ago, around this time, he gave his class of 1950 senior speech at Maple Valley. To honor him, I'd like to close this speech the same way he did when he gave his. He closed by saying the phrase Au Revoir which doesn't mean goodbye, but rather see you again. And after he was done, he went home, put on his work overalls, and plowed the fields. Because his father had died and left him with the farm. So, I'll say it once again, congratulations! And Au Revoir to the Class of 2026. |
