PAGE, AZ Ð The five-card draw poker game was on as two groups of four men studied their cards intensely. The eight men played 20 rounds vying for prizes which included a two-person, two-night stay at the Stratosphere Casino in Las Vegas, valued at $395.
Brent Decker and Mike Gervais were in a tie for first place with each collecting 1,1350 chips, resulting in a playoff hand. Decker walked away the top player after showing a pair of deuces.
Sponsored by Jo’s Dragons Relay for Life team headed by Jo Bjorholm, the poker players had a $50 buy-in and raised a total of $546 to benefit the American Cancer Society.
Despite the poor turnout, Bjorholm is pleased.
“I think there was a lot of confusion with the people thinking this was another poker run,” Bjorholm said. “The rain and the storm came in and no one wants to run around in that, but $546 is a success.”
Serving as publicity chairman for the Relay for Life committee in Page, Bjorholm heads her own relay team every year and is determined to raise $5,000 by September. The poker tournament is the first 2010 Relay for Life events to be held in Page.
“We are going to attempt to have at least one activity a month until the relay,” she said.
Currently scheduled is the annual wine tasting event held at Bonkers Restaurant in April, and the road rally and relay kickoff in June. As the weather warms, other relay teams will start hosting car washes, garage sales other fundraising events.
“We had hoped we would have more people, but we look forward to holding this again next year,” Bjorholm said. ”We are pleased all of our players left happy and have assured us they will return next year. It was a good day and everybody just had a blast.”
