MVAO Senior Justin Hazard has enjoyed the scenery of many golf courses throughout his high school career. His enjoyment, at least lately, is a little more fast-paced, though. As a cross country runner, he has joined many other runners during many meets.
Last Thursday, Justin and his teammates competed in the regional cross country meet in Spirit Lake. He crossed the line with a time of 16:40 to capture 5th place and to qualify for the state meet this Saturday. Hazard was just 14 seconds behind the top runner, Chris Postma of Unity Christian from Orange City who ended his race with a 16:26 time.
The boys team placed 6th in the regional meet with 163 points. However, the top three teams continued to the state meet.
The girls also ran on that day. They ended the day with 222 points and a ninth place finish. They, too, did not qualify for state. None of the Ram girls finished in the top 10.
Justin is the son of Rhonda and Scott Hazard of Anthon.
Good performance at State on Saturday, Justin!

The community has been filled with broken hearts this past week as a heart of gold stopped beating.
On Tuesday, October 21st Joe Dirksen's roommate at Northwest Missouri State University in Maryville, Missouri, found Joe dead in bed. An autopsy revealed that the 24-year-old died of a massive heart attack.
A 2003 graduate from MVAO High School, Joe attended Des Moines Area Community College for 3 years before transferring to Northwest Missouri State University where he was a senior majoring in Sales and Marketing and minoring in Communication. While he lived a short life, his life was full of activity. Sports were high on his list of favorites, both playing them and watching them. The Kansas City Chiefs, Iowa State Cyclones, and Northwest Missouri State Bearcats were followed closely by Joe, and at one time he worked for the Sioux City Explorers. Sports weren't his only interests, though. Joe was proud of his Catholic faith He shared this faith with hundreds of high schoolers as a SEARCH youth counselor.
Anyone who met Joe would agree that he had a true love for life. He was known for his smile and natural energy. He loved to talk and joke around with his parents, brothers and sisters, family, and many friends. His passion for life and the hearts he touched will live on forever.
Family and friends from this area and from DMACC and NMSU mourn the unexpected loss of Joe. His immediate family included his parents Warren and Kathy Dirksen of Danbury; his brother and his wife, Mark and Lisa Dirksen and their children Annabel and Emmet of Sioux City; his sister and her husband, Julie and Brent Steemken and their children Zachary and Benjamin of Des Moines; his sister and her husband, Angela and Owen Primavera and their daughter Zorianna of Lenexa, KS; his sister Sandra Dirksen of Council Bluffs; his brother and his wife, John and Allison Dirksen of New Brighton, MN; his sister Amanda Dirksen of Sandpoint, ID; his brother Matthew Dirksen of Ames; and his grandmother Delia Beacom of Sioux City.
A scholarship fund has been established in memory of Joe Dirksen. Contributions can be dropped off at First State Bank of Mapleton or sent to Joe Dirksen Memorial Scholarship Fund, 313 North 4th Street, Mapleton, IA 51034.
